WINE CONNECTION: ITALIAN FLAIR BY THE RIVER

Wine Connection:

Story by: RICHARD MCLEISH

Italian restaurant Ciao at Mandarin Oriental, Bangkok has recently been reconceived, giving it a new lease on life and reasserting it as a premium Italian destination in the city.

Home at one of Bangkok’s most majestic hotel addresses, Ciao recently received the most progressive make-over in its 25-year history. With its premier position on the Chao Phraya River just in front of the original Authors’ Wing of the hotel, the restaurant now has a more understated atmosphere. The twee furniture of old has been replaced with more modern trimmings in red, white and black including bucket-style plastic wicker chairs that are well-padded for comfort and a signature design motif on the bar spotlit with red lights under the marquee-style canopy, affording a more relaxed ambience.

Head Chef Luca Casini, under the expert patronage of Culinary Director Chef Norbert Kostner, draws from his experience in both Europe and Asia to offer three styles of dining – a chef’s table (8 people) in air-conditioned comfort towards the back of the restaurant, a la carte closer to the river and less formal Spuntino (Italian-style tapas) at the bar.

Chef Luca’s menu is steady with traditional Italian staples on the left side along with some touches of personal flare listed as “chef inspired” on the right. Highlights include Coda Di Bue Alla Vaccinara (Braised Ox Tail Vaccinara with Lentil Stew), which comes playfully presented in a shin of cow bone and offers the richness of ox tail balanced by earthy and crunchy lentils; and Gamberoni Alla Griglia Con Crema Di Aglio (Grilled Tiger Prawns with Garlic Emulsion), which boats crunchy prawns in full flavour picked up by a sweet and aromatic sauce.

To finish, try one of the 10 dessert selections, including Panna Cotta in 3 Modi that sees three creative and successful fusions - basil/strawberry, rosemary/honey and caramel. The restaurant also has a deep wine cellar with a focus on the Piedmont province in Italy.
