WINE CONNECTION - CANADIAN WINE DINNER
Wine Connection:

We had the pleasure and privilege to attend a Canadian Food & Wine Event / Wine Dinner at The Plaza Athenee Bangkok…at Reflexions Restaurant, a superb location & settings to host another memorable wine dinner.

The evening started on the outside open air terrace of the beautiful hotel with a welcoming speech of the embassy of Canada…a few lines to introduce some of the secrets of Canada’s wines and food.

After a few bubbly glasses of Steller’s Jay Brut…one of Canada’s premier wines, a video presentation on Canada & its different regions set the tone of the evening. The Chef & his culinary team were ready.

H.E. Mr. Philip Calvert Canadian Ambassador, Natalie Glebova Miss Universe 2005, Chanya
Swangchit, Isara Vongkusolkit, Kamala Sukosol, John Darch, Rapeepan Luengaramrat, Kevin Speed, Nirut Kunnawat, Martin Faist Director of Culinary + Service of Hotel at The Reflexions
We started with a Canadian Oyster served with a mix of spices and condiments as an appetizer. At the same time, a 2011 Riesling was introduced to us…with a great balance of fruits and acidity.

The first course was a Canadian Goat Cheese with notes of lemon, red fruits and berries…bright colors and simplicity on the plate.

The second course was an Artic char with native red indian roots and greens. White fish was tender and a great fit with the Riesling. A light course to enjoy the white wines and sparkling wine.

The other attendees mingled and chatted while indulging on both the Riesling and the Merlot 2010 from Okanagan Valley that was about to be served on the table.

For the next course, the snow crab was served hot and steamy on a bed of light herbs and with a refreshing avocado soup.  A nicely presented round plate…avocado soup was so good that we all requested some more !

The Halibut fish served next was cooked perfectly and served with green peas, cranberries and pecans.

It was now time to taste the Merlot while waiting for the next course. In the glass, wine had a medium ruby color, with a bright and sweet nose of red berries. A flavor of cassis with a hint of liquorice….

On the palate, wine had a  medium acidityand light tannins. Some notes of blackberry, and dried herbs.

The Bison Tenderloin was served with spices sour plums, almost like caramelized apples and topped with fine Porcini mushrooms, finished with a peppered glaze sauce.

For the last course of this super dinner, we were introduced to a wonderful smooth 2011Cabernet Franc Ice Wine, although very different that the usual German Ice Wines you usually find. The wine had some hints of blackberry and apple but not so much sweetness.

The ice wine was served with a White Chocolate cercle, berries coulis and vanilla sherbet. The last course was a delightful palate cleanser.

Our wine host gave us a little history of the each of the wines we had been served and discussed the Canadian culture and Cuisine…a great evening to know more about Canada and its culinary secrets...
